Editor's Choice

Estevan Vega is the author of The Servant of the Realm and The Sacred Sin, both fantasy/thriller novels published by the time he was eighteen. In Interview with Young Novelist Estevan Vega, he answered questions about his writing career. Estevan explained that his father's insistence that he write instead of watching television was the catalyst for his interest in the craft and noted some influential authors that have given him inspiration. He even opened up about the challenges that he has faced as a young writer, such as dealing with ridicule from classmates and learning how to swallow harsh criticsm from agents and publishers.

Estevan Vega on Why he Writes Thriller Novels

When asked what he enjoys the most about writing in the thriller genre, he explained, "They're just so fun. I like to try and tackle big ideas or problems, so incorporating a darker, fantastical element to the whole thing really adds some flavor. I've written some stuff without it, but I love the supernatural so much, that it seems to slither into my writing eventually."

He went on to say, "One of my friends wants me to write an ordinary story and I can do that, but right now...well, not right now. I guess we could blame cool films like Seven, Constantine, and a ton of superhero flicks for this little guilty pleasure."

Virtual Book Tour With Estevan Vega

Estevan Vega has been quite busy lately promoting his latest novel, The Sacred Sin, as well as his upcoming book, Arson, due out later in 2009. Arson has truly turned out to be a labor of love for the author, since he has been working on the book's concept since 2006. As in his other novels, Arson has a strong element of the supernatural, this time in the form of a boy who lives with an abusive grandmother and can create and control fire with his mind. Estevan Vega officially signed a contract in April with Tate Publishing to publish Arson.

In addition to doing radio and traditional interviews, Estevan Vega has added a decidely modern twist to his promotional efforts. Since the beginning of June, he has been on a virtual book tour, being featured as a guest on several Internet blogs to talk about his novels and his writing career.

Authors Latino, the blog of Latina author Joann Hernandez, is promoting Vega as part of their first Latino virtual book tour and he is generating quite a buzz around the blogosphere. His novels have been receiving a lot of favorable attention, including a five star review from The Midwest Review for The Sacred Sin.

Estevan Vega Gives Writing Advice

Estevan Vega has certainly accomplished a lot in his short career and he seems poised for even greater things in the future. As far as any advice that he might have for aspiring writers, he demonstrated both a bit of humor and skill at self – promotion when he said, "Well, for starters, go out and buy all of my books."

On a more serious note, he added, "Then, go check out the greats. Read. Watch good movies. Investigate some conferences in your area and try to get in...try not to get discouraged if someone doesn't like your stuff; it happens to all of us. Write, edit, write, repeat. Have faith and write what you feel. It sounds cheesy, but write from your soul, the light and the dark. It's who you are."

Estevan Vega is certainly showing wisdom and poise at a young age and is definitely an author to follow.

His novels can be purchased wherever books are sold, including Amazon, Borders and Target. Visit his website for more information about his books and upcoming events, and also check out the Authors Latino blog for more about his virtual book tour.
